Després de ser tancat en un camp de concentració nazi durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, el refugiat jueu Hans Muller emigra a Israel per començar una nova vida. Però els traumes psicològics de la guerra continuen afectant la seva ment i no triga a atacar per accident un policia. Convertit en fugitiu, el confús i inestable Hans fuig de la justícia per tot Israel, juntament amb un jove orfe, a la recerca de pau d'esperit.
