Španělsko koncem 30. let, poslední dny občanské války. Desetiletý Carlos, jehož otec, republikán, byl zabit v boji, je svým poručníkem zanechán v sirotčinci Santa Lucía, depresivní stavbě uprostřed vylidněné krajiny, kam jsou sváženi sirotci po obětech války. Ponuré chodby budovy v sobě skrývají nejen neřestné vztahy dospělých protagonistů - jednonohé ředitelky Carmen, profesora Casarese, mladé učitelky Conchity a agresivního školníka Jacinta -, ale v den svého příjezdu se v nich Carlos setkává i s přízrakem chlapce, který se nepřetržitě snaží navázat s ním kontakt. Z živých pak musí čelit především nejstaršímu ze sirotků, potměšilému a nepřátelskému Jaimemu. Záhy začne mít Carlos podezření, že dětský duch s nejasnými úmysly je duchem bývalého žáka Santiho, který před časem zmizel za záhadných okolností. Santiho duch použije nového obyvatele sirotčince k tomu, aby krutě a nečekaně splatil krvavý dluh svému vrahovi.
