Ocitáme se v New Orleansu v roce 1917 ve čtvrti červených luceren. Prostitutka Hattie žije se svou dvanáctiletou dcerou Violet v bordelu Madame Nell. Protože je Violet odmalička obklopená atmosférou sexu a divokých večírků, touží se stát také prostitutkou a tak Nell zorganizuje aukci o její panenství. Za několik měsíců se Hattie vdá za bohatého zákazníka a Violet se přestěhuje k mladému fotografovi Bellocqovi, který je do ní bláznivě zamilovaný. Violet se tak stává podivnou figurkou - předčasně vyspělou ženou, která v srdci přesto stále zůstává nevinným dítětem.
