Sebevědomý Poručík Chris Burnett byl vycvičen jako specialista na řízení bojových letadel typu F/A - 18 Superhornet a stal se skutečným špičkovým pilotem a navigátorem. Není proto divu, že nadupán vědomostmi a neotřesitelnou vírou ve své schopnosti, chce ukázat světu, co umí. Jeho poněkud konzervativní nadřízený admirál Reigart jeho horkokrevnost nepovažuje za vhodnou. „Jsme pozorovatelé a ne vojáci“, říká admirálu Reigartovi jeho podřízený Chris. Během průzkumné akce ale Burnett vyfotografuje cosi, co vidět rozhodně neměl, je sestřelen a pronásledován. Navzdory tomu, že celá akce probíhá "za nepřátelskou linií" , jde poručíkovi o krk. Admirál Reigart poruší své zásady a udělá riskantní rozhodnutí pro záchranu jeho života.
