Osamělá sedmadvacetiletá Catherine prožívá obtížné období. Několik let se starala o svého otce, kdysi geniálního matematika, postiženého duševní chorobou. Otec však právě zemřel a ona se obává, zda se i u ní neprojevují příznaky jeho nemoci. Její pragmatická sestra Claire, přijíždějicí do Chicaga na pohřeb, ji v pochybnostech spíše utvrzuje. Svérázná Catherine se nesměle sbližuje s otcovým bývalým studentem Halem, který pátrá po tom, zda v některém z mnoha sešitů, jež starý profesor grafomansky zaplňoval, není záblesk vědeckého poznání. Díky Catherine mladík skutečně objeví sešit, v němž je převratný matematický důkaz. Dívka však tvrdí, že je to její práce. Dojde ke sporu a k vzájemnému odcizení. Cathy se posléze na poslední chvíli vymaní ze sestřina područí a vrátí se k Halovi, aby spolu pokračovali v práci…
