Let číslo 93 aerolinek United Airlines startoval kvůli čekání na ranveji o něco později. Když letadlo dosáhlo letové výšky, už byly dostupné zprávy o unesených letadlech. Piloti dostali textovou zprávu: „Pozor na vpád do kokpitu, dvě letadla narazila do Světového obchodního centra.“ O chvilku později do kokpitu vtrhli únosci, z rádia se ozvalo dvakrát mayday, pak se řízení zmocnil únosce. Pravděpodobným cílem letadla měl být důležitý objekt ve Washingtonu, spekuluje se o sídle Kongresu nebo Bílém domě. Pasažéři uneseného boeingu se telefonicky spojili s policií, linkou United Airlines i svými blízkými na zemi. Dozvěděli se o únosech letadel a jejich nárazech do budovy Světového obchodního centra. Podle rekonstrukce událostí se pak pasažéři odhodlali k odporu.
