Den unge skuespillerspire, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter), charmerer sig ind på livet af sit idol, den aldrende Broadway-stjerne Margo Channing (Bette Davis, der baserede sin rolle på filmdivaen Talullah Bankhead), hvis nærmeste omgangskreds tæller playwright Lloyd Richards (Hugh Marlowe), hans kone Karen (Celeste Holm) og regissøren Bill Sampson (Gary Merrill), som Margo er forelsket i. Eve bliver snart Margos uundværlige hjælper og følgesvend, men bag den søde, elskelige facade gemmer sig en glubsk og usund appetit på egen berømmelse. Filmens fortællerstemme tilhører teaterkritikeren Addison DeWitt (den uovertrufne George Sanders, der vandt en Oscar for sin rolle), hvis iagttagelser af alle involverede parter konstant er lige på kornet.
