A költő, festő és filozófus Jean Cocteau megfilmesítette a gyönyörű lány és a csúf Szörnyeteg jól ismert meséjét. A nemes szívű lány a Szörnyeteg kertészének gyermeke. Apja életéért a lány hajlandó beköltözni a bestia komor várába. A Szörnyeteg látványa először halálra rémiszti őt, de idővel megsajnálja a rettenetes testbe zárt teremtményt.
