În septembrie 1971, noi recruți sosesc pentru formarea lor finală înainte de a fi desfășurați în Vietnam în iadul verde al Țării Tigrilor din Louisiana. În fiecare minut al fiecărei zile de antrenament de o săptămână, ofițerii le reamintesc băieților că antrenamentele dure le pot salva viețile în junglele din Vietnam. Umilirea face parte din cruda pregătire, iar argumentele cadeților între ei devin din ce în ce mai intense. În acest mediu fierbinte, Bozz, care încalcă toate regulile, și Paxton, care consideră războiul doar piatra de plecare a carierei sale de scriitor, devin prieteni. Exteriorul și excentricitatea renegatului Bozz îi aduc la început probleme doar lui și tovarășilor săi, dar în circumstanțele dificile, devine clar cine este adevăratul erou.
