În acest film terifiant, plin de acțiune, bazat pe benzile desenate MARVEL, cinci tineri cu puteri speciale sunt duși într-o instituție secretă pentru un tratament care îi va vindeca de pericolul puterilor lor, cel puțin așa li s-a spus. Invitați de dr. Cecilia Reyes să-și împărtășească poveștile despre când s-au manifestat puterile prima oară, cei cinci „pacienți” înțeleg într-un final că fac parte dintr-o clasă de oameni numiți mutanți, care au fost marginalizați și temuți. În timp ce-și retrăiesc povestea originii, amintirile lor par să se transforme în niște realități terifiante. Adevărata întrebare este de fapt ce e real și ce nu e și devine clar că instituția nu e ceea ce pare. Dar de ce sunt ținuți prizonieri? Și cine încearcă să-i distrugă?
