La universitatea Princeton, John Nash se luptă să aducă o contribuție utilă pentru a servi ca moștenirea lui în lumea matematicii. El face în cele din urmă o descoperire revoluționară, care îl va aduce în cele din urmă Premiul Nobel. După absolvirea școlii el se întoarce către predare, devenind implicat romantic cu eleva sa Alicia. Între timp, guvernul cere ajutorul pentru spargerea codurilor sovietice, care îl implică repede într-un complot conspiraționist terifiant.
