Benátky, 16. storočie. Násilnícky židovský úžerník Shylock je ešte horší ako jeho zlá povesť. Nevynechá žiadnu príležitosť, aby si vychutnal problémy kresťanských šľachticov, ktorých chce zaviesť do svojho domu. Jedného dňa lichvára požiada o pôžičku vážený kupec Antonio, ktorého mladý priateľ Bassanio zúfalo potrebuje peniaze, aby získal ruku svojej milovanej Portie. Keď však Antonio nedokáže peniaze včas splatiť, Shylock si môže vybiť svoje roky ponižovania a opovrhovania na nenávidenom svete aj s úrokmi. Cena, ktorú musí Antonio zaplatiť, bude skutočne bolestivá. Klasická hra Williama Shakespeara ožíva s novou naliehavosťou v rukách režiséra Michaela Radforda. Nadčasový príbeh rozpráva nielen o náhode a osude, ktoré riadia ľudské životy, ale aj o antisemitizme. S využitím špičkového hereckého obsadenia a s dôrazom na vizuálnu krásu svojich filmových obrazov sa Radford vydal cestou klasickej adaptácie.
