Píše se rok 1962. Oslnivý americký pár, charismatický Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) a jeho přitažlivá mladší manželka Colette (Kirsten Dunstová) se na své cestě po Evropě zastaví v Aténách. Při návštěvě Akropole se seznámí s Rydalem (Oscar Isaac), mladým, řecky mluvícím Američanem, který pracuje jako průvodce, a přitom využívá naivní turistky. Rydal je okouzlen Colletinou krásou a Chesterovým bohatstvím a sofistikovaností, a proto se nebrání pozvání na večeři. Avšak Mac Farlandovi nejsou tím, čím se na první pohled zdají být. Hossein Amini ve své adaptaci románu Patricie Highsmithové oživuje Hitchockův styl a o svém thrilleru říká: „Nechtěl jsem vytvořit barvotiskový obrázek Řecka či Turecka, jak vypadaly v 60. letech minulého století, ale spíš ukázat svět, ve kterém se odráží duševní rozpoložení mých postav a jejich pád do osobního podsvětí."
