Luck Hatcher žije s rodinou klidným životem na svém ranči. Manželka je těžce nemocná a k ranči přijede banda kovbojů. Obviní Lucka z krádeže koně. Malého syna Toma jeden z mužů zastřelí, když se snaží utéct. Manželku Payton McCay udusí polštářem. Uplyne dvanáct let. Z Lucka se stane psanec, z McCaye bohatý a bezohledný obchodník. Na Lucka je vypsaná tučná odměna a lovec hlav, mladík který si říká Bodine ho hledá. Stejně tak ho zdánlivě hledá Jessup. Jessup jednoho večera před zraky všech ve městě Lucka zastřelí. Nechá jeho mrtvolu vyfotit a fotografii ukáže McCayovi. Inkasuje odměnu a vrátí se do hotelu, kde na něj čeká Luck. Je to jejich trik, jak přijít jednoduše k penězům.
