V poklidném, malém, americkém městečku den jako každý jiný. Brzo se ale hlavní hrdinka, matka tří dětí, dozví z televize, že byl na několik velkých měst podniknut nukleární útok a po pár větách přestane televize i rádio fungovat. V městečku se brzy objeví první násedky krize jako nedostatek benzínu, jídla a první případy nemoci z ozáření a matka se musí rozhodnout zda městečko opustit nebo ne. Původně pouze pro televizi natočený film reálně ukazuje, jak by to mohlo vypadat v menším městečku, odřiznutém od inforací po nukleárním útoku.
