Mladý sirotek Philip (Sam Claflin) je vychováván svým starším bratrancem Ambrosem. Oba blízcí muži jsou od sebe rozděleni kvůli cestě do Toskánska, kde se Ambrose seznámí se svou ovdovělou sestřenicí Rachel (Rachel Weisz), která se brzy stává jeho ženou. Nedlouho po svatbě Ambrose umírá, avšak ještě předtím stihne napsat Philipovi zprávu, ve které novou manželku ze své blížící se smrti obviní. Philip je ostražitý a snaží se tajemnou a podezřelou Rachel vypátrat, je to ale nakonec ona, která vyhledá jeho přítomnost. Místo kruté vražedkyně se však Philip setkává s krásnou, elegantní a inteligentní ženou, do které se zamiluje.
