Město Dijon bujaře slaví nástup Karla Smělého, čtvrtého vévody burgundského. Karel pořádá velkolepé oslavy, jimiž chce oslnit nejurozenější šlechtice, které sem pozval, včetně francouzského krále, svého bratrance Ludvíka XI. Oslavy končí velkým turnajem a mladý vévoda doufá, že jeho barvy s převahou zvítězí. Rytíř Robert de Neuville miluje Jeanne de Beauvais, schovanku krále. Tu si ovšem vyhlédl i Vévoda Burgundský a Ludvík XI. dobře ví, že tento sňatek by prospěl nejen "blahu Francie", ale především i jemu samotnému. Podcenil však lásku Roberta a Jeanne a především svého rivala Vévodu Burgundského, který se neštítí žádných podlostí a intrik, jen aby naplnil svou touhu po moci.
