Ricard Carson, en hensynsløs multimillionær, udnytter, at 40 % af verdens befolkning ikke tror på, at der har været mennesker på månen, og han planlægger derfor at gøre krav på månen og udnytte den som kilden til ren energi for fremtiden; Helium 3. Han vil slette Apollo 11-astronauternes bedrifter fra historien og det eneste, der kan stoppe ham, er hverken NASA eller USA's præsident men en stædig 12-årig surfer ved navn Mike Goldwing. Sammen med sine venner, nørden Marty og den aspirerende journalist Amy samt et lille firben med Godzilla-vrangforestillinger, rejser han til månen... med hjælp fra Mikes bedstefar, der er tidligere astronaut, men ikke har haft kontakt med familien i mange år. Det er nu op til Mike både at redde Jordens og sin egen families fremtid.
