Den første film i serien om Old Shatterhand og hans indianerven Winnetou er en af de bedste med en god sammenhængende historie om jagten på en ældgammel skat i en grotte ved en stor sø. Undervejs udfoldes en masse spændende optrin, blandt andet skal Shatterhand kæmpe mod en indianer med tomahawk og kniv i en drabelig duel. Sceneriet er fantastisk som altid i disse film, men her danner det - sammen med en imponerende lydkulisse - en ekstra flot ramme om en underholdende fortælling, der må være en af Karl Mays bedste. Herbert Lom spiller skurken Brinkley og Karin Dor danner blikfang.
