Der mittellose Michel begeht bei einem Pferderennen einen Handtaschenraub und findet sogleich Gefallen an dieser aufregenden Tat. Denn seiner Meinung nach, haben alle großen Persönlichkeiten in der Geschichte die gesellschaftlichen Regeln und Gesetze bis zu einem gewissen Maß gebrochen. Obwohl er kurz darauf von einem Polizisten verhaftet wird, kommt er unbeschadet davon, da die Beweise gegen ihn nicht ausreichen. Währenddessen liegt seine Mutter, die aufopfernd von deren Nachbarin Jeanne versorgt wird, im Sterben. Als diese stirbt, will er Jeannes Hilfe nicht annehmen, obwohl er heimlich Gefühle für sie hegt. Er wendet sich an einen professionellen Taschendieb um alle Tricks und Kniffe des Gewerbes zu lernen und schlägt sich fortan mit kleinen Diebstählen durch.
