Apollo 3 legénysége a holdraszállásra készül amikor Houstonban arról értesülnek, hogy az oroszok hamarosan űrhajót indítanak a Holdra. Az űrközpontban döntenek: az eredeti küldetésre kiképzett asztronauta Chiz helyett a civil Lee kapja a feladatot. Mindössze három hete van a felkészülésre, ráadásul sikeres holdraszállás esetén közel egy évig kell a bolygón vesztegelnie, míg az Apollo készen áll arra, hogy biztonságban visszahozza a Földre. A verseny drámai fordulatot vesz amikor az oroszok a tervezettnél két nappal előbbre hozzák az indítást.
