Son Hayes heeft het nooit over de littekens op zijn rug. De shotgun kogels onder zijn huid vormen een blauw-zwart patroon. Zijn collega's speculeren over hoe hij ze gekregen heeft. Boy en Kid Hayes, zijn broers, praten er ook net over. Het verleden blijft hem, net als het litteken, achtervolgen. Ze hebben een slechte jeugd gehad. Hun altijd dronken vader dacht meer aan zichzelf dan aan de rest van het gezin. Toen deze op een gegeven moment het gezin verliet, verbeterde hij zijn leven en werd een succesvol man. Hij hertrouwde en bracht nieuwe zoons ter aarde. Op de begrafenis van vader Hayes ontstaat er een ruzie tussen de twee groepen zoons.
