De flamboyante Schotse kapper Crawford Mackenzie ontvangt een uitnodiging voor de jaarlijkse prestigieuze kappersverkiezing in Los Angeles. De documentairemaker Martin Samuels reist met hem mee. Nadat de manager van het Century Plaza Hotel Crawford op het matje roept wegens het overschrijden van zijn krediet, ontdekt hij dat hij enkel uitgenodigd werd als gast en niet als deelnemer. Om zijn land en vrienden alsnog trots te maken, beweegt hij hemel en aarde om toch nog in de wedstrijd te geraken. Hij belt zijn landgenoot Sean Connery op, hij probeert een clubkaart te bemachtigen, hij roept de hulp in van de winnaar van vorig jaar en hij helpt Connery's manager aan een nieuw kapsel. Maar is dat voldoende om de trots van Schotland te worden?
