Londen, de jaren zestig. De elf jaar oude David Wiseman is gek op cricket, ook al is hij er helemaal niet goed in. Hij heeft een professionele outfit maar niet het bijbehorende talent. Daarom wordt hij op school altijd gepest. Als hij een Jamaicaanse familie als buren krijgt en zij een cricketnet in hun achtertuin bouwen, is David in de zevende hemel. Hij sluit vriendschap met zijn nieuwe buren en krijgt cricketles, waardoor hij op school eindelijk geaccepteerd wordt. Maar dan ontstaan er raciale spanningen in de buurt als andere buren het de nieuwkomers moeilijk gaan maken. David moet kiezen tussen erbij horen en opkomen voor de nieuwe vrienden die zijn wereld op z’n kop hebben gezet.
