Allan leidt met zijn broer Freddie een florerende fruitgroothandel. Maar in liefdeszaken is hij een uitgesproken pechvogel. Dat verandert nadat Allan tijdens een melancholisch uitstapje naar Cape Cod bijna verdrinkt. Hij valt letterlijk uit de boot en wordt gered door een bloedmooie zeemeermin.
