'La jetée' speelt zich af in Parijs, vlak na de nucleaire vernietiging van de stad tijdens Wereldoorlog III. Een niet bij naam genoemde oorlogsgevangene zag tijdens zijn kindertijd een man sterven, een voorval dat nog steeds in zijn geheugen gegrift staat. Wanneer na de oorlog experimenten in tijdreizen worden opgestart, vinden de onderzoekers niet genoeg testpersonen die hiervoor mentaal sterk genoeg zijn. Dus wordt de man uit de gevangenis gehaald en verplicht deel te nemen. Met behulp van dit programma slaagt hij erin terug te keren in de tijd en contact te leggen met de vrouw die ook aanwezig was tijdens het voorval dat hij zich nog zo sterk herinnert. Qua inhoud bevat 'La jetée' de typische elementen van de sciencefictionfilm zoals we die nu nog kennen: tijdreizen, een snufje horror en romantiek, een post-apocalyptische en vijandige omgeving die gered moet worden, nostalgie naar het verleden en een slot dat het verhaal perfect rond maakt.
