Bessie Faro's (Andie MacDowell) rustige leven neemt een dramatische wending als haar man Johnny (Viggo Mortensen) omkomt bij een vliegtuigongeluk in Veracruz, Mexico, haar met een hypotheek en veel schulden achterlatend. Bessie vertrekt naar Veracruz om Johnny's bezittingen op te halen, waaronder een pakketje baseball kaarten. Ze ontdekt dat de kaarten aanwijzingen bevatten die leiden naar een vette bankrekening in Veracruz en tot de verdenking dat haar man er een dubbelleven op nahield. Bessie besluit de aanwijzingen van de kaarten verder te volgen en dat is het begin van een lange reis. De raadselachtige Dr.Fergus Lamb (Liam Neeson) helpt haar op haar zoektocht om het mysterie van het duistere verleden van Johnny, waarvan onduidelijk is of haar helper hier misschien zelf een rol in heeft gespeeld, te ontrafelen.
