Architect Helena en haar man Ivan besluiten Barcelona te verlaten om een nieuw leven te beginnen op het platteland. Daar heeft de zwangere Helena een huis geërfd dat ze van plan is te restaureren. Met hulp van een team van lokale bewoners wil het idealistische stel het bijbehorende kurkeikenbos gaan exploiteren. Vanaf het begin focust Helena zich op het huis, terwijl Ivan zich met volle overgave in de kurk (‘suro’) verdiept. Enthousiast springt hij in zijn nieuwe rol en probeert als een gelijke met de werkers op te trekken. Als Helena een andere kijk blijkt te hebben op hoe een en ander geleid moet worden, komt hun relatie steeds meer onder druk te staan.
