De când soția i-a murit în incendiul unui accident, doctorul Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas), un eminent specialist în chirurgie plastică, s-a ocupat de crearea unui nou tip de piele, artificială, rezistentă la arsuri, cu care și-ar fi putut salva soția. După doisprezece ani, reușește să creeze o piele care funcționează ca un scut împotriva tuturor agenților externi.
