Boxer Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) je na vrchole slávy, má nádherný dom a milujúcu rodinu. Športu doteraz obetoval všetko a jeho manželka Maureen (Rachel McAdams) by si želala, aby viac času trávil s ňou a ich dcérou. Billy stojí pred vážnym rozhodnutím, či dá prednosť úspešnej športovej kariére alebo rodine. A vtedy dostane osudný úder – zdanlivo nevinná potýčka so súperom na jednom večierku vyústi do prestrelky, ktorú jeho milovaná Maureen neprežije... Billyho svet sa rúca. Keď ho navyše súd uzná neschopným starať sa o dcéru, padne úplne na dno. Jeho jedinou nádejou je návrat do ringu.
