Tragična ljubezenska zgodba je postavljena v represivno religiozno skupnost na severu Škotske. Naivna in verna mlada ženska Bess, ki trpi za duševnimi težavami, se nepričakovano poroči z Janom, danskim ateistom, ki dela na naftni ploščadi. Z možem užijeta kratko obdobje sreče.
